Getting ready for school
In this talk, Dr Bahar Koymen (University of Manchester) discusses how language changes for children as they reach school age. She discusses how language can become more complex as children start school and what parents, caregivers and practitioners can do to support this transition. She also discusses children's developing theory of mind.
This talk was filmed at our Kids Say the Funniest Things event at the Manchester Museum in November 2015. The talk is aimed at parents, caregivers, early years practitioners and anyone else with an interest in how children learn to communicate.
If you enjoyed this talk and want to find out more about the formal language children encounter as they enter school, read our Nursery World Magazine article, A Formal Occasion.
