Seminar: Expectation-driven language learning

Dr Hugh Rabagliati (University of Edinburgh) will give the first LuCiD seminar of the 2018/19 series, on Expectation-driven language learning. The seminar will take place at the University of Liverpool, Rendall Building Seminar Room 4 on Tuesday 2nd October, 11-12.30.

Abstract:

Our expertise at using language -- whether holding conversations, understanding sentences, or recognising words -- is to a large degree driven by prediction: By anticipating what others are likely to say, we can ease the burdens of speaking and listening. But is prediction only a characteristic of expert systems, or is it also a means for becoming expert in the first place? I'll discuss our group's recent work trying understand the roles that prediction plays in language development.
